Please note that as of March 30, 2020, we no longer issue paper record check results with an embossed seal. All results are provided digitally in a secure PDF that includes a coloured GSPS crest watermark and an updated GSPS digital seal. Completed record checks are not printed or mailed.

If you need to confirm that a police record check is original and authentic, you may contact Customer Service at 705‑675‑9171, ext. 6622. Please note that staff cannot discuss any details related to an individual’s criminal record.

When does my record check expire?

Record checks do not have an expiry date.

How often do I need to get a record check?

This will depend on the organization requesting the record check. Some may require it only once, while others may ask for updates annually, biannually, or on another schedule.

I needed fingerprints because I am a “VS hit”. What does that mean?

The Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) includes a search of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s national criminal records database to determine whether an applicant has been convicted of, and later received a Record Suspension (pardon) for, any sexual offences listed in the Criminal Records Act. If the system finds that your personal information (name, gender, and date of birth) is similar to that of someone who has been pardoned for a sexual offence, you will receive a ‘VS hit.’ In this case, fingerprints are required to confirm your identity and complete the record check.

I already submitted fingerprints for a previous record check. Can I use those fingerprints for my next record check?

No, fingerprints cannot be reused for your next record check.

Can I get a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) if I am not working with vulnerable persons?

No. A Vulnerable Sector Check can only be completed for positions that involve direct responsibility for the care and well‑being of vulnerable persons. To meet the legal requirements under the Criminal Records Act, the position must place the individual in a role of authority or trust over children or vulnerable persons. If the position does not meet these requirements, police services are not legally permitted to conduct a Vulnerable Sector Check.

Why was I asked to submit a detailed letter to get the Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3)?

Letters may be requested from the organization when an applicant cannot clearly explain how their role involves direct contact with, or responsibility for, the care and well‑being of vulnerable persons. A letter may also be required when the duties of the position do not reasonably involve direct work with vulnerable persons. If the position does not meet the legal requirements under the Criminal Records Act for a Vulnerable Sector Check, police services are not permitted to conduct one.

Can I get a record check for personal reasons?

Yes, through the submission of fingerprints by way of a privacy request.

Can I get a record check when I am living outside of Canada?

We are not authorized to process record checks for applicants who live outside of Canada- all record checks for those living or working abroad must be processed by the RCMP through the submission of digital fingerprints.

I am an adult and my youth charges are appearing on my completed record check. Why?

If you have committed a criminal offence as an adult during the disclosure/access period of any previous charges under the Youth Criminal Just Act, and are subsequently convicted, the youth record becomes part of your permanent adult record and may be disclosed on your completed record check.
